Hello, friends! Three new pages of diary comics for you.
I’ve been toying with a new comics-making exercise that asks you to think not about what you did in a day but about how your day might have gone, had you made a different decision at one key moment. As anyone who has even a semi-regular diary comics practice knows, some days just aren’t memorable — some days nothing happens! But maybe you still want to make a comic: this is one answer to that predicament.
As a thought experiment, you can choose one moment in your very-ordinary-day and think about how making a different choice at that moment might have changed your whole day (or whole life!). Naturally, I think the more absurd you make it, the better, but it doesn’t have to be silly. Maybe you change what you order for lunch and it leads to a burning new desire to travel to a new place? Perhaps you actually talk to that telemarketer or petition-guy on the street instead of cutting them off and you plant the seed of a surprise new friendship?
Truth, as they say, is stranger than fiction so you really can’t take this idea too far. I had so much fun making this comic and trying to ramp up the absurdity in each panel. The real lie, though? That Tiddlywinks would ever let me sleep until 7:30 in the morning. That cat likes her 5 AM breakfast!
So while the previous comic might have been based on a lie, this next one reflects my very real experience of making a deeply uncomfortable mistake. Ouch!
Chickpea was furious I interrupted her slumber with my stupid human flailing and yelling…
And that’s it for my recent adventures! If you were going to change one decision and end up with a wildly different [fictional] life, what would it be?
